Watermelon and the broom
Street trade is prohibited in Gyumri and is considered illegal. Despite that, those in charge of overseeing the quality and expiration dates of products assure that street trade is uncontrollable.
"The person standing on the street has no legal documents for us to find him. He may not be in the same spot if a consumer wants to return low-quality products," says head of the center for veterinarian and food control of the Shirak region Anushik Mnatsakanyan.
The head of the state inspectorate for food security calls on purchasing products from fixed trading spots and closed markets in order to avoid possible poisoning.
According to experts, watermelons and melons sold on the streets especially in the summer may absorb dangerous materials from the hot asphalt and be dangerous to the health. Residents of Gyumri know that, but continue to do shopping on the streets.
Food that is not kept frozen may rot soon. Thus, only ice-cream sales are allowed on the streets. Meanwhile, things are different in Gyumri where other products are sold outside, including juice, watermelon, etc. In addition, next to the food, consumers see brooms that are used to clean that same street.
