Ara Gharagyozyan: Criminal cases were initiated only after the revolution (video)
Today is the International Day for Victims of Torture, proclaimed by the United Nations. Each year this day, the UN Against Violent Torture presents an annual report on torture during the year. Attorney Ara Gharagyozyan presented the report on the legislative gaps and the arbitrariness of the police. "The organization has recorded about 30 cases of ill-treatment in police and investigative bodies. In the April-May revolutionary months, we also witnessed the violation of rights. During the rallies, numerous violations were reported by police officers, including improper detention, deprivation of liberty, and violence against journalists. Torture is also considered a moral damage. We have seen that Levon Yeranosyan cursed Sasun Mikaelyan, before that, he insulted Zaruhi Postanjyan during the events in Khorenatsi Street. All these things must be brought to justice," said the attorney. According to Ara Gharagyozyan, criminal cases were initiated in the Special Investigative Service (SIS) only after the revolution. Torture cases were also publicized. 28 detainees out of 797 at Nubarashen penitentiary self-injured this year, in Armavir - 24, 9 cases were registered in Hrazdan penitentiary, in the Hospital for Convicts - 6 cases. Self-injure cases could have been prevented if a proper work was implemented. In cases of self-injury in penitentiary institutions it would be possible to reduce some extent if there were psychologists.
