New status did not better living conditions
Once Akner was a separate village near Alaverdi. Later it became a town district. But even the new status did not better living conditions.
As usual, residents encounter numerous problems.
"We wish the road to the village were rehabilitated," say the residents.
Near a village shop we met Mrs. Manushak who was selling things on credit.
She is going to repair her debts to the shop after selling mushrooms in the city.
Mrs. Manushak says she has fewer customers today.
The forest is the main source of income for local residents.
"Few people soil lands in the district. Cattle-breeding demands extra efforts. Great sums are needed to take the grass to the village," says Sushik Gorginian.
"Some 40 liter petrol is needed to fetch a van of grass from the mountains let alone the money to be paid to the mower and driver. Very often we buy grass for others leaving ours in the mountains," she adds.
"The youth has no future in the village, that's why they are leaving. About 70 % have gone abroad," says Mrs. Shusik whose son is in Russia.
"My only son left for Russia with his wife. Last time he sent us money in December. We miss him very much but as they sau "C'est la vie," she says.
