Dirty water flows into the Debed
Tourists very often confuse the water flowing from the rocks as mountain springs and take photos there.
But during the summer, the unpleasant smell of the water proves that it is simply dirty water, which is flowing into the river from the multi-story buildings located in the Alaverdi district. The water from the sewerage systems of other cities also flow into the Debed River.
Each month 56,500 cubic meters of mechanically, biologically and chemically unclean water flows into the river. However, before the earthquake, almost all cities near the basin of the Debed had water-disposal systems and stations for cleaning the dirty water But the Alaverdi sewerage system, which was strong enough to clean 20,000 cubic meters of water, has not been functioning for 15 years now.

Head of the Department of Operations of the "Armenian Sewerage and Water" company's Alaverdi district states that the station has only cleaned the water mechanically due to lack of electricity, chlorine and other materials since 1990; however, the station doesn't function now due to malfunctioning.
The tubes reaching the cleaning station have deteriorated and flown into the river. As a result, the dirty water flows into the basins, pollutes the environment and causes a danger for pandemics.
Chief epidemiologist of Alaverdi Zhanna Bedyan states that they conduct checks for bacteria and chemicals on a regular basis. They have not found any germs for cholera, but there are errors in the fixed indices and that is why it is prohibited to swim in the river.
"The greatest problem is the malfunctioning of the sewerage cleaning station and the danger could grow even more if there are patients diagnosed with bacillus," says the doctor. Experts say that usage of the water for irrigation may also be dangerous and spread the disease through products.
Representative of the Alaverdi district of "Armenian Sewerage and Water" states that their organization doesn't have the means to build or reconstruct the stations because that requires a lot of money.
