Yerevan preparing for opening ceremony of Nzhdeh’s statue (video)
Today the statue of state and military figure Garegin Nzhdeh will be unveiled at the park near Republic Square. On this occasion all the nearby streets have been closed starting from early morning. Police vehicles on the crossroads, traffic jams on other streets and traffic overload prove it.
Preparatory activities have been actively underway at the park- cleaning and restoration activities of the fountains have been carried out, garbage has been collected, paving has been washed as well as the pedestal of the statue and the green areas.
The employee of Yerevan Municipality refused to give interview stating that they are in a hurry and they should finish the activities in time. In a few hours Serzh Sargsyan will also take part in the opening ceremony of the statue.
Tricolors are being installed for decoration of the territory. Music is turned on at the park. Relevant equipment has been brought to the part for that purpose. Cultural event will also take place during the opening ceremony of the statue.
On the opposite pavement of the statue is Yerevan Vernissage, which is usually crowded with buyers and merchants on weekends. Today there are few people, only vendors selling handicrafts have been in Vernissage, and the sellers of used stuff, who usually sit on pavements, haven’t come to Vernissage. When we asked the vendors about their colleagues, they answered that the vendors had been warned in advance not to come to Vernissage on May 28, on the First Republic Day, and that during the opening ceremony of Nzhdeh’s statue the territory must have an appropriate look.
By the way, at the moment reconstruction activities are underway in one part of Vernissage, and that territory is closed with big covers provided by the Municipality. The covers read, “May 28, Republic Day, Garegin Nzhdeh.”
