The government crackdown on the Armenian opposition, specifically the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) in February, came as a heavy blow for the country’s major opposition parties, Lyudmila Sargsyan, a lawmaker from the Armenian National Congress  (HAK), said on May 14. “The opposition needs time to re-establish cooperation formats and, naturally, we are trying to use our time effectively,” she said. The opposition lawmaker says the BHK is not isolated today; the party preserves its position after the heavy blow. Speaking about the opposition, Lyudmila Sargsyan said HAK and BHK stand out as two major opposition forces in the political domain.  “In case these two parties unite their efforts, they will be able to work out joint programs and pose their demands [to the government].  We repeatedly raise issues in the National Assembly but, as a rule, they remain unattended.  As long as we do not have the problem-solving axis outside the National Assembly that will unite opposition forces around it, we cannot expect fundamental changes in the country,” she said.
