The International Committee of the Red Cross has been working in Armenia since 1992. People who went missing during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the plight of their families have been at the heart of ICRC activities since 1992. The ICRC has registered 40000 missing people in Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan ever since. Since the beginning of its humanitarian mission in the region, the ICRC has been working closely with the authorities of Armenia. “We help the authorities to develop appropriate legal mechanisms that will regulate the problem of missing persons in Armenia,” said Zara Amatuni, Program Manager for Communications of the ICRC Yerevan Office. In cooperation with the Ministry of Defence, the ICRC also carries out another important mission. They collect biological samples from close relatives of missing persons.
