Danish soccer player Jonathan Richter has had the lower part of his left leg amputated, six weeks after he was struck by lightning during a game between his team FC Nordsjaelland and Hvidovre on July 20, 2009. The lightning bolt hit his leg and caused him to go into cardiac arrest. Richter was put into an artificial coma for ten days following the game, but was forced to make the decision to amputate the leg when he woke up.

The operation was a success and Jonathan Richter is currently recovering at Hvidovre Hospital.

His life is no longer periled.

The administration of Nordsjaelland has fixed a pension for the amputated footballer and the insurance company has paid a compensation of 500 thousand Danish krone.

Jonathan Richter joined FC Nordsjaelland in 2005. He has scored nine goals during the 70 games in the team. His twin brother Simon also plays in Nordsjaelland.
