Four representatives of Armenia’s ethnic minorities were elected to the National Assembly after the April 2 parliamentary elections. Three of them representing the Yazidi, Kurdish and an Assyrian communities ran for the parliament on the ticket of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK). Anahit Khosroyeva, a representative of the Assyrian community in Armenia, says these four representatives cannot solve problems in the National Assembly. “It does not matter. They may speak in favor or against something. It cannot be decisive. Representatives of national minorities always work with authorities,” she told journalists today. Anahit Khosroyeva says the Electoral Code needs to be amended again and again and hopes that the new MPs will initiative the changes. She says the Assyrian community does not have any conflicts with the authorities over political issues. Their main concerns are cultural and educational issues. Assyrians do not have textbooks. Besides, they have few teachers. Anahit Khosroyeva hopes that the four MPs will raise the problems of all eleven ethnic minorities in the National Assembly.
