OSCE Chairman condemns use of force in Armenia, again appeals for post-election dialogue

The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Finnish Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva, condemned the use of force against peaceful demonstrators in Yerevan today.

“DO NOT GO AWAY FROM THE EMBASSY”

Levon Zurabyan, Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s former press secretary, called the demonstrators in front of the French Embassy not to leave. “Dear nation, I have just met Levon Ter-Petrosyan. We will stand here and not go anywhere until he tells us what to do”, said Zurabyan.

TER-PETROSYAN WITNESSED

WHERE WERE YOU, HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER?

At 10.30 a.m. people who were made out of the Liberty Square at dawn, relatives of detained and missing people, as well as ordinary citizens, who did not participate in the strike but were beaten by special police groups, gathered in front of the French Embassy in Yerevan.

PEOPLE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO APPROACH EACH OTHER

The RA Human Rights Defender Armen Harutyunyan negotiated with the police and told the people in front of the French Embassy and Yerevan Municipality that the police would allow them join other demonstrators and together with them move to the sport complex after Vazgen Manukyan and hold a rally there.

CRIMINAL CASE AGAINST SUKIASYAN

When the police surrounded Khachatur Sukiasyan’s house and began searching it, people gathered in front of Sukiasyan’s house and exclaimed “Levon President”, “Victory”.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF TER-PETROSYAN’S HEADQUARTERS

On March 1st 2008, at 6:45 AM police troops armed with batons, shields and electroshocks without any notification attacked about four thousand peaceful protestors in the Liberty Square, Yerevan.

THEY ASSAULTED AND USED FORCE ON PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATORS

A group of policemen assaulted on the people on sit-down strike in the Liberty Square today at 6.20 a.m.. Policemen with truncheons assaulted from the North Avenue, but receiving corresponding respond from the demonstrators they withdrew. But at about 6.45 a.m. some groups of policemen again assaulted on the people and beat them severely.

“10 POLICEMEN BEAT A YOUNG MAN”

Early in the morning the beaten demonstrators as well as other citizens gathered in front of the French Embassy in Yerevan. Other citizens who had organized a march also joined them. The demonstrators will stay here until 15.00 p.m., and then they will hold a rally.

Addressing today’s rally at Liberty Square Levon Ter-Petrossian underlined that the popular movement has reached an important haven, and the local factor has turned into an international factor. The movement has acquired a trajectory which is already a model for the people of other countries, how people can come together and oppose to the totalitarian and bandit regimes and remove them from the country.

OYP MEMBERS TEAR OFF PARTY CARDS

RECENT ARRESTS IN ARMENIA

A series of unwarranted arrests were made in Armenia at the post-election period. All detainees are either affiliated with opposition parties or relatives, acquaintances and friends of oppositionists.

NOTHING FOUND

Armenian MP Hakob Hakobian's house was locked at about 1.30 p.m. today. People crowded in the street told A1+ that more than 20 policemen had visited the Hokobians. They rummaged the house for a few hours but in vain.
