Politics

A group of policemen assaulted on the people on sit-down strike in the Liberty Square today at 6.20 a.m.. Policemen with truncheons assaulted from the North Avenue, but receiving corresponding respond from the demonstrators they withdrew. But at about 6.45 a.m. some groups of policemen again assaulted on the people and beat them severely.

“You said “now”, why don’t you say it now”, said the police men and beat the people who had gathered to protect their votes. Within an hour the policemen emptied the Liberty Square. They burnt tents and beat people. According to our sources, some people who managed to escape from the attack hurried to the nearest foreign embassies in Yerevan. The RA First President Levon Ter-Petrosyan stood lonely on the platform in the Square and declared that he would not go anywhere and the police was free to detain him. A great number of military servants surrounded the Square and the territories neighboring the Square.

The Head of Kocharyan’s guards Grisha Sargsyan made Ter-Petrosyan get into the car by force and took him to his private house. We have no information about the detained people. The neighboring territory of Opera is surrounded with policemen. The photojournalist of “Aravot” daily and “Chorrord Ishkhanutyun” newspaper Gagik Shamshyan was again beaten.

We should remind that yesterday Robert Kocharyan reflected on the possible developments of the incidents and excluded the solution through force, while the US Secretariat called our authorities not to use force on the demonstrators, as it had not been done until the present day.
