OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović today said journalists’ safety must be ensured at all times, following recent incidents and coercive actions by police against journalists covering public protest in Yerevan, Armenia.

Levon Martirosyan was the only deputy from the HHK faction, who was disappointed about the failure of young protesters, “It is another bad precedent in the sense that in the future if people want to protest, they will remember the previous incidents, these events that they protested and nothing came out of it.”

In addition, we are troubled by reports that journalists and their equipment were specifically targeted during the operation. It is imperative that the Government conduct a full and transparent investigation of reports of the excessive use of force by the police to the full extent of Armenian law.

Today at the National Assembly, NA HHK faction member Ruzan Muradyan touched upon the events at Baghramyan Avenue.

On the current tense situation in the country- in the NA

Short time ago Aram Manukyan, Lyudmila Sargsyan and Stepan Demirchyan came to Nor Nork Police department. In the interview with journalists they noted that they had boycotted the NA sitting.

Actress Lala Mnatsakanyan regrets that she wasn’t at Baghramyan Avenue at dawn. According to her words, everybody is interested in electricity price hike, but today the people have been left alone.

Short time ago a group of activists, who had participated in the sit-in strike at Baghramyan Avenue, approached Arabkir Police department: they were also taken to police at night and according to their words they were kept in a police department next to metro.

Short time ago HRD Rapid Response Department representative Martik Martirosyan got out of Arabkir Police station. He informed the crowd that there are about 40 people inside, he met everybody, presented their rights and explained how they can defend their interests.

Once again the authorities used excessive force against peaceful protesters, about 250 activists, protesters and journalists were taken to police stations.

Today the NA Vice President Eduard Sharmazanov announced at the NA that the Police had used force within the law.

Today on starting the NA extraordinary sitting the deputies protested: they don’t want to discuss the agreement after the events at Baghramyan Avenue at dawn.

Short time ago Koryun Davtyan was released. He wasn’t charged in 3 hours and he was given status of a witness and was released with the mediation of the advocate.

Residents of the city are now gathering near the police station with a demand to release the activists who were protesting electricity price hike in the country.

Men in civilian clothing attacked journalists who were covering the clashes on the site, smashed their equipment, including a telephone. A number of media representatives were also subjected to violence during the events.

Police began operation at about 5:30 am after numerous warnings that the sit-in organized on the street was unlawful.

The situation is relatively calm on Baghramyan Avenue where activists of the No to Plunder initiative continue their sit-in against the rise in electricity prices.

Police in Yerevan seem to have decided ‘to clean’ Baghramyan Avenue, disallowing protesters campaigning against the rise in electricity prices to approach the Presidential Palace located at Baghramyan 26.

Protesters are now sitting down on Baghramyan Avenue and are not moving. They are staging a sit-in there.
