The film “Modernity in Architecture” tells about the architecture of the newly formed Soviet Armenia, and its transformations. The film particularly focuses on architectural trends in the 20s and 30s and the conflict between the so-called ‘Tamanyan style’ and constructivism. In the newly established Soviet Armenia, there were two competing visions of national architecture: that of Alexander Tamanyan and his associates and that of the avant-garde or constructivist architects. The city was being founded in the atmosphere of mutual criticism of these opposite groups.
