A group of former political prisoners and Karabakh war veterans of the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) have expressed their deep concerns over last week’s incident near Berdzor. “We are greatly concerned about the painful and shameful events that occurred near Berdzor on January 31. We call on everyone to show restraint and vigilance and stay away making steps and announcements that might further heat up the atmosphere. We also call on everyone, including the Founding Parliament movement and media, not to speculate the name of the ASALA and its historical contribution, the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and other cherished concepts of our nation for their political purposes. We – the former political prisoners and Karabakh war veterans of the ASALA – announce that we have nothing to do with the initiative of the Founding Parliament and we do not want to interfere in the political life of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Once again, we reiterate our support for the creation of a powerful state, where the government, the opposition and other forces are obliged to put state and national interests above the interests of a group or party,” reads the statement.
