In mourning: In the earliest image from February 7, 1952, the Queen is pictured in a black outfit as she returns to Clarence House in London. At this point, she had been monarch for just one day after the death of her father King George VI when she was only 25 years old.

Queen's Coronation: On June 2, 1953, Queen Elizabeth II is pictured wearing the St Edward Crown and carrying the Sceptre and the Rod after her coronation in Westminster Abbey. A coronation ceremony marks the formal investiture of a monarch to the throne. Coronations have been held at London's historic Westminster Abbey for over 900 years.

Royal wave: Before Elizabeth became Queen she was already married to Philip. They tied the knot when she was 21 and he was 26. Here they are in May 1954 with their children, Prince Charles and Princess Anne, on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. The couple have two more children, Prince Andrew, was born in 1960, and Prince Edward, who arrived in 1964.

At the races: It's no secret the Queen is a fan of the horse races. She began riding lessons at the age of three and is well known for her knowledge of thoroughbreds and breeding. Her favorite races to attend are Royal Ascot, but here she is in 1955 at the St Leger races at Doncaster racecourse, which take place every September.

Walking the corgis: The Queen is also known for her love of corgis - and has owned at least 30 Pembroke Welsh corgis, all of whom have descended from her dog Susan, who was given to the Queen on her 18th birthday. Here she is with one of her beloved corgis and a young Prince Charles in May 1956.

The Queen's speech: Queen Elizabeth has given a Christmas Day message every year since she came to the throne in 1952, but previously it had been a radio broadcast. Here she is making her first ever televised Christmas day broadcast to the nation from the Long Library at Sandringham in 1957.

Dressed for the mines: The Queen showed she's not afraid to get her hands dirty as she dressed in a white boiler suit, scarf and safety helmet for her first ever visit to a coal mine on July 1, 1958. She spent around 30 minutes underground at Rothes Colliery in Fife, Scotland.

Royal baby: Queen Elizabeth holding her son Prince Andrew during an outing in the grounds at Balmoral, Scotland, on November 8, 1960. He was the first child to be born to a reigning monarch for 103 years.

Bonding time: In a picture dated May 18, 1961, the Queen is shown out riding at Windsor Castle with a young Prince Charles.

On horseback: On June 8, 1963, the Queen is seen riding sidesaddle at the Trooping the Colour ceremony on Horse Guards Parade. The Queen has appeared at her annual birthday parade every year of her reign, except for 1955 when a national rail strike cancelled the event.

Checking the soldiers out: The Queen, who is also head of the Armed Forces, is seen inspecting the 1st and 2nd Battalions Coldstream Guards, at Windsor, on June 22, 1964.

Birthday celebrations: The Queen in the House of Lords during the opening of Parliament on April 21, 1966 - her 40th birthday. She has only missed two of the ceremonies; in 1959 when she was pregnant with Prince Andrew and in 1963, while expecting Prince Edward.

Dressed up: The Queen dancing with Prince Philip at a state ball during the palace in Valletta during a Commonwealth visit to Malta in November 1967. The Royal couple lived in Malta between 1949 and 1951 in the early years of their marriage.

Royal photographer: Queen Elizabeth and PA Chairman W.D. Barnetson looking at a collection of Royal images during a reception in Guildhall, London, marking the centenary of the Press Association - who officially photograph the Queen - on June 6, 1968.

Summer holidays: Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh during their traditional summer break at Balmoral Castle on September 26, 1976. The highland retreat is one of the Queen's favorite places and she heads off to Scotland for the summer each year.

Royal entourage: Queen Elizabeth II is pictured in a bright yellow outfit during a walkabout in Muscat while visiting Oman on March 2, 1979. The Queen always wears bright colors when performing Royal duties so spectators can see her in a crowd.

Walkies: The Queen with some of her corgis walking the Cross Country course during the second day of the Windsor Horse Trials on May 17, 1980. The monarch is responsible for introducing a new breed of dog known as the 'dorgi' when her corgi Tiny was mated with a dachshund 'sausage dog' called Pipkin, which belonged to Princess Margaret.

Family photo: Pictured from left, the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth, Prince William, Prince Harry, Princess Diana and Prince Charles after the christening ceremony of Prince Harry on December 21, 1984. The Queen now has eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
