Millionaire John du Pont dies in prison at 72
John E. du Pont, a U.S. millionaire convicted of killing Olympic gold medalist, wrestler David Schultz at his palatial Newtown Square estate in 1996, died Thursday in a Pennsylvanian prison.
Du Pont was one of the richest murder defendants in U.S. history at the time of his conviction. He had served 13 years of his 13- to 30-year sentence.
The 72-year-old millionaire fancied himself a patron to wrestlers and financed the Wrestling Federation of Bulgaria. He was on good terms with world-known wrestler Valentin Yordanov.
In 2010, du Pont transferred $ 100 000 to the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation to help it organise a European championship.
John du Pont's personal wealth was estimated at up to $250 million.
