AREN’T THERE PIGS IN ARMENIA?
Support A1+!There is no pork in Armenia. Today Armenians mainly eat frozen pork imported from foreign countries. One can hardly find fork at Yerevan markets.
“We spend so much money on food but we rarely buy good meat. Pork is very popular in Armenia. It has become a traditional dish during family holidays. But nowadays pork is very expensive,” 45-year-old Seda Galstian complained to A1+.
36-year-old Natasha Qalashian says that both pork and beef taste awfully.
This morning A1+ interviewed some butchers in Khorenatsi Street near the so-called GUM. They say there are different kinds of meat at markets. Besides, prices haven’t gone up. Armenia faces a serious problem with pork.
“Pig is disappearing in Armenia,” noted butcher Arthur. He says after the African plague peasants slaughtered their pigs.
“A peasant once keeping more than 10 pigs today has none. Furthermore, swine-breeding farms have become fewer and don’t meet market demands. That is why the prices are up,” said butcher Hakob.
Another butcher, Seyran, said that markets mainly sell frozen pork imported from Russia, Brazil, etc. At first we let the meat melt for a day and then sell it. It isn’t harmful and has no viruses.
Note, 1 kilo of local pork costs 3000 – 4000 drams. Buyers pay 2000 drams for the pork imported from abroad.
