CPJ CALLS FOR EARLY RELEASE OF IMPRISONED JOURNALIST

The Committee to Protect Journalists issued the following statement today in response to imprisoned editor Arman Babadzhanian's request for early parole. In September 2006, a district court in Yerevan sentenced Babadzhanian, the editor of the pro-opposition newspaper Zhamanak Yerevan, to four years in jail on charges of forgery and draft evasion.

ALL ARMENIAN MOVEMENT TO SUPPORT “HERITAGE”

OMBUDSMAN REQUESTS TO ENSURE SECURITY

On July 4 Armenia’s Human Rights Ombudsman Armen Harutiunian sent an official letter to the Head of the National Security Service of Armenia, Gorik Hakobian. The Ombudsman requested the NSS to ensure the security of his family members.

RAFFI HOVANNISSIAN GIVES REASONS

CUSTODY PROLONGED

The court of General Jurisdiction of Kentron and Nork Marash prolonged Armenian MP Sasun Mikayelian’s custody for another two months on July 7. The decision was made by Justice Ruben Afinian.

TER-PETROSSIAN AND CZECH FM REFERRED TO POLITICAL PRISONERS

On July 6 Armenia's first President Levon Ter-Petrossian met with the Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic Karel Schwartzenberg who is in Armenia on an official visit, reports the press service of Popular Movement.

SIT-DOWN STRIKE

Representative of the All Armenian Movement Levon Zurabian announced that their Party is starting a 28-day-long sit-down strike in Northern Avenue, considering that it will have a decisive role in their struggle.

AUTHORITIES ARE RECOMMENDED A WAY OUT

“Resign and go away. This is the only way out,” declared Member of the People’s Party Grigor Harutyunain at today’s rally. He noticed that for 10 years they have been warning Robert Kocharian and Serzh Sargssian that in order to remain in power they had to yield rather often.

RALLY STARTS

The rally organized by the leaders of the All Armenian Movement initiated near the Matenadaran with a little delay. It is conducted by Suren Surenyants, member of the “Hanrapetutyun” (Republic) Party.

POLICE ALLOW TO HOLD THE RALLY

After short-term negotiations Yerevan Chief of Police Nerses Nazarian and RA Deputy Chief of Police Alexander Afian allowed the rally to be held near the Matenadaran on condition that there would be no march along the streets of Yerevan.

HAMLET ABRAHAMIAN RECOGNIZED “NOT GUILTY”

Minutes ago Hamlet Abrahamian, a rally participant, was recognized “Not Guilty” by the Kentron and Nork-Marash General Jurisdiction Court and was released from the detention cell.

ROADS ARE CLOSED

The roads leading to the capital are closed again. The public transport is banned to take people from the regions to the capital. “A1+” tried to find out why Bus 261 and Bus 262, which serve the Abovyan-Yerevan route, do not work on Fridays. ARZUMANYAN' S CUSTODY PROLONGED

Today the Court of General Jurisdiction of Yerevan’s central Kentron and Nork Marash districts prolonged the custody of Armenia’s ex-foreign minister Armenia Alexander Arzumanian for another two months. Arzumanian was charged under Article 225 of the RoA Criminal Code /public calls for mass disorders/.
