“Political repressions continue in Armenia as the authorities feel the upcoming menace hanging overhead,” said Karapet Rubinian, ex speaker of the National Assembly and member of the Popular Movement. Rubinian heads the subcommittee for the protection of political prisoners detained in connection with the March 1-2 unrest.

Today while people continued their sit-down strike at Northern Avenue and demanded Serzh Sarkissian to resign office, the latter took a stroll along Liberty Square escorted by high-rank officials.

The Committee to Protect Journalists issued the following statement today in response to imprisoned editor Arman Babadzhanian's request for early parole. In September 2006, a district court in Yerevan sentenced Babadzhanian, the editor of the pro-opposition newspaper Zhamanak Yerevan, to four years in jail on charges of forgery and draft evasion.

The rally organized by the leaders of the All Armenian Movement initiated near the Matenadaran with a little delay. It is conducted by Suren Surenyants, member of the “Hanrapetutyun” (Republic) Party.

After short-term negotiations Yerevan Chief of Police Nerses Nazarian and RA Deputy Chief of Police Alexander Afian allowed the rally to be held near the Matenadaran on condition that there would be no march along the streets of Yerevan.

Minutes ago Hamlet Abrahamian, a rally participant, was recognized “Not Guilty” by the Kentron and Nork-Marash General Jurisdiction Court and was released from the detention cell.

Though the rally organized by the All Armenian Movement begins in 30 minutes, the police encircled Liberty Square and the area near the Matenadaran long before. The All Armenian Movement is going to hold the rally near the Matenadaran at 7 p.m.
