Armenian lawmaker Alexander Arzumanyan was not surprised to learn that Hovik Abrahamyan has been appointed as the country’s next prime minister. He says the name of the National Assembly Speaker had been speculated as a potential candidate following the resignation of former premier [Tigran Sargsyan]. “This is not a matter of personality. We should wait for the actions and program/s of the new government. Only after that we can give our assessments,” he said. Alexander Arzumanyan does not link the resignation of the former prime minister with the activity of the opposition quartet. It was evident that at some point the prime minister would be ‘sacrificed’ as his government had had many failures in recent years. The lawmaker also reminded Serzh Sargsyan’s appeal to the new government during the meeting of the governing body of the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK), when Serzh Sargsyan said that bribery was prohibited. “It turns out that until recently none of the ministers and the prime minister had done any wrong thing as bribery had not been banned. It seems that we are stepping into a new stage where bribery, corruption and monopolies are banned. Let us see how the Cabinet ministers will act given the new ban,” he said. “From the day when the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) declared itself to be an alternative force, it had a definite target in the person of the government and prime minister,” said Mr Arzumanyan. He added that BHK will not be so tough in case of Hovik Abrahamyan as the new prime minister is an acceptable figure for the BHK. Asked whether the BHK will join in the new coalition government, the lawmaker said, “If it forms a coalition government, it will discredit itself otherwise its cooperation with the ruling force will slow down. Undoubtedly, we can use a great variety of terms, depending on the taste of this or that political force.”
