Jailed war veteran's lawyer appeals verdict
Support A1+!The lawyer of retired army colonel Volodya Avetisyan is appealing the verdict of a lower court that sentenced the Karabakh War veteran to 6 years in prison. Lawyer Ara Zakryan says the appeal should be reviewed, however give the fact that the judicial system in Armenia is dependent of the authorities he doubts the likelihood. In July, the Court of General Jurisdiction of Arabkir and Kanaker-Zeytun Administrative districts sentenced Volodya Avetisyan to 6 years’ imprisonment. Avetisyan must also pay $2000 in confiscation to the state budget. The colonel was the first to call authorities’ attention to the problems faced by freedom fighters. Avetisyan was detained on September 20, 2013 on fraud charges. In his final speech made on July 17, Volodya Avetisyan, a retired colonel and a Karabakh War veteran, refused to plead guilty.
