About 200 activists of the opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK) today gathered in front of the National Assembly building, demanding the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) to ensure a quorum at the HAK-initiated extraordinary session.

The special session was to discuss the draft amendments to the country's electoral code. However, the session did not take place because of lack of quorum.

"The MPs are elected to the National Assembly to present the interests of the public. If they cannot work, let them resign," said a participant of the protest action.
The protesters cannot explain why the Republicans are reluctant to amend the Electoral Code.

"They probably concluded that it is better to be fools than reach a deadlock," said another.

Those gathered outside the parliament building are convinced that the outcome of the 2013 presidential election is pre-determined: the authorities led by the HHK are going to rig the election.

HAK MP Aram Manukyan told the opposition activists that with its decision to boycott the special session the Republican Party had violated the NA regulations and shown its will ‘not to conduct fair elections.'

The MP also informed the presentees that the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK), the HAK and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun (ARF-D) will convene a sitting to discuss their further steps.
