The second round of the French presidential elections has begun. The two candidates are the incumbent President Nikola Sarkozy and Socialist candidate Francois Hollande.

Member of the Socialist Party Oland, who garnered 28.6% of the votes in the first round, has surpassed his opponent, which only received 26.2% of the votes.

Based on the statistics, Francois Hollande will most likely win in the second round, making him the first Socialist President of France after 1988.

On May 2, more than 17.9 million citizens of France viewed the candidates' 4-hour TV debate.

The BBC reports that the main topic of the debate was the growing unemployment rate and the Euro crisis.

Talking about the issues facing France, Nikola Sarkozy underlined his achievements in the fight against the fall of the currency and pledged to preserve the "strong France" if elected.

However, Francois Hollande declared that the country was currently in a "serious crisis" and was in need of reforms.
