Karabakh conflict should be solved on the basis of international law
The Nagorno Karabakh conflict should be resolved on the basis of international law and the right of peoples to self-determination, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman declared in Yerevan during a joint news conference with Serzh Sargsyan.
"Despite Azerbaijan's attempts to discuss Karabakh conflict at Islamic Conference meeting, Lebanon's position on the issue remains unchanged: we have always opposed to adoption of resolutions condemning Armenia in international organizations," said the Lebanese President.
Michel Suleiman called on the OSCE Minsk Group and superpowers to take efforts to establish peace in the world.
In his turn, Serzh Sargsyan underlined that Azerbaijan is trying to present the Karabakh issue as a religious conflict among the Muslim countries.
"Azerbaijan's efforts to impart religious context to the Nagorno Karabakh issue will sound absurd to anyone who is familiar with the history of the conflict. However, Baku plays on people's unawareness and its anti-Armenian propaganda may have dramatic consequences. In this context, it is important that friendly countries demonstrate impartial and unbiased posture since any unbalanced step will undermine the fragile stability and equilibrium in the region," he stressed.
Serzh Sargsyan emphasized the need for strengthening collaboration with Lebanon and international structures, especially in political, trade-economic and cultural.
The Lebanese President noted that his country great importance to stability and peace, and stands for peaceful and diplomatic settlement of conflicts and establishment of normal relations between neighboring countries.
This (South Caucasian) region must become a bridge of civilization, rather than a dividing line," stressed Michel Suleiman.
Lebanese President arrived in Armenia on December 8 on the invitation of Armenian leader Serzh Sargsyan. The parties have signed seven agreements to promote bilateral ties in seven spheres.
