Russia's interests of the last twenty years are part of Armenia's foreign policy which is evidenced by Georgian opposition's posture towards the region's superpower [Russia], says political analyst Alexander Iskandaryan.

"Russia is an important partner for Armenia. It ensures Armenia's security within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and cannot be replaced by other country at this moment. Russia's interests towards Armenia can be compared with that of Iraq and the USA," Iskandaryan told journalists on September 16.

However, the political analyst says Armenia does not always agree with Russia's decisions.

"For example, in 2008 when Russia and Georgia were at war, Armenia was pressurized to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. It was greatly difficult for Armenia to deny it since Armenia had a similar problem connected with the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Besides, the recognition was in the interests of Russia. But, of course, Armenia did not do it," said the political analyst.

Speaking about Armenia's domestic politics, Iskandaryan did not rule out the resumption of opposition-government talks. He says the opposition cannot change the authorities through snap elections.

"The opposition does not rally as many people as to demand snap elections in the country. The number of rally participants should reach at least 500,000 people to pose such a demand but the opposition was unable to gather so many people even in February 2008," he said.
Iskandaryan says the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK), Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun, Heritage, Prosperous Armenia (BHK) and opposition bloc Armenian National Congress (HAK) would take seats in the parliament if the elections were held this Sunday.
