South Sudan becomes world’s newest nation
On July 9, Southern Sudan will become the Republic of South Sudan, a date and event which the people of South Sudan.
A new country will appear on the political map of the world starting July 9, 2011.
South Sudan, officially the Republic of South Sudan, is a landlocked country in East Africa. Juba is its capital city. South Sudan becomes an independent state on 9 July 2011 following a referendum held in January 2011 in which nearly 99% of voters opted for separation from the rest of Sudan. This new country was a part of the United Sudan, the largest county in Africa comprised of 25 states.
A series of events are planned in the country this week. Celebrations, including a host of concerts, sports events and religious prayers are taking place throughout the week with the main events planned in Juba from July 8th - 10th. Representatives from numerous countries and international organizations, Including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, have been invited to South Sudan to participate in the events.
The UN General Assembly is expected to adopt a resolution on July 14 on membership of South Sudan.
The newly-born country has already established diplomatic relations with South Korea.
