The authorities have started a dialogue with the opposition to hand over power, says the board chairman of the Armenian National Movement (HHSh).

Aram Manukyan hopes to see all political prisoners in freedom ahead of the opposition's May 31 rally "since their release derives from the interests of the authorities."

The HHSh representative says the amnesty was proposed by the authorities.

"It was a political step by the authorities. None of the political prisoners or opposition members has ever requested the authorities to grant an amnesty. The political prisoners did not commit any crime to apply for amnesty," said Manukyan.

He believes that the authorities will be forced to meet opposition demands under massive public pressure.

"A year ago no one believed that the authorities might reopen the probe into the March 1 case, but today we witness some progress in this direction," he said.
