“Armenia is ready to protect the dignity of its people”
On April 11, Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan left for Lebanon for a 3-day official visit.
In Beirut, the Armenian delegation was met by Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri, reports RA NA press service. The speakers of the two parliaments had a vis-à-vis meeting.
Nabih Berri noted that the economic relations between the two countries considerably yield to political ones and the two parliaments must do their utmost to strengthen economic ties. Armenia and Lebanon have signed 19 agreements which were further ratified by the legislative bodies.
Hovik Abrahamyan, in his part, noted that a field should be set up to enable businesspeople to make investments in both countries. According to the RA NA Speaker, meetings between businesspeople should be made frequent in order to deepen economic ties.
Mr. Abrahamyan also thanked his Lebanese counterpart for emphasizing Karabakh's right to self-determination. In this context, the RA NA Speaker underlined that Karabakh cannot be involved in the territory of Azerbaijan.
During the meeting reference was made to Armenian-Turkish rapprochement as well. Nabih Berri voiced hope that the relations would be normalized in the near future and expressed readiness to assist the Armenian-Turkish peace deal.
"We have a neighbour whose President and authorities regularly make bellicose statements. The Armenian people do not seek a war but if one is waged against Armenia we are ready to protect the dignity of our people," said Hovik Abrahamyan.
At the end of the meeting the two parliaments signed a a Memorandum of Understanding.
