The Artsakh Parliament elected Bako Sahakyan as President of the Republic at a special sitting on July 18, Chair of the Counting Commission Romela Dadayan said after summing up the resuksts of secret ballot. Bako Sahakyan's main contender Edward Aghabekyan received 4 votes. The Free Motherland, Democratic Party and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun backed Sahakyan's candidacy in the elections. The three parties hold 27 mandates in the 33-seat parliament. Bako Sahakyan needed to poll 21 votes to hold office in the transition period until the new Constitution comes into force in 2020.
