Lieutenant Colonel Gagik Kurdyan first visited the tomb of Gurgen Daribaltayan in Yerablur Pantheon. He says that he knew Daribaltayan still from Soviet army and he has many memories. “In Yerevan headquarters they were drafting a map for entering and taking Karabakh, he didn’t allow me to enter, saying me to go and find armaments.” Daribaltayan wasn’t concerned about how and where from the former officer of Russian Kobra or K-43 special battalion could find armaments and deliver them to the Armenian squads. But for this important work General-Colonel Kurdyan wasn’t allowed to participate in the battles. In 1992 Spartak Matevosyan worked as a history teacher, when after Azerbaijan had seized Shahumyan, Vazgen Sargsyan made a call for gathering a group of soldier-suicide bombers. Spartak Sargsyan was among the first to react. First was defense of Chldran, then- Drmbon. “We were well armed with all the possible arms for that time- DShK, machine gun, gun, we were given everything. We were moved to the village Vank to defend the Gandzasar monastery.” It was the first most important and hard action, during which machine-gunner Vardan Hovhannisyan was killed. Spartak Matevosyan remembers Vardan with special regret; Vardan was from Javakhk, he came to Yerevan to study, but left for front. Suicide bombers had no right to be held captive. Commander remembers that many servicemen kept the last bullet or grenade for themselves. He says that battlefield is not for cowards.
