Opinion: City Council will act upon instructions (video)
Artists in Armenia are not particularly enthusiastic about the upcoming municipal elections in Yerevan. They think the problems of the Armenian capital will not be resolved because everyone cares about his own interests. The idea of a city council is a good idea of alternative governance, but unfortunately, its role has been downplayed in Yerevan,” says artist Haghtanak Shahumyan. He is concerned that candidates are nominated by political parties and says the parties will influence decisions in the future whereas in reality members of the City Council should act solely in the interests of Yerevan. This creates a contradiction. Singer and songwriter Artavazd Bayatyan added in turn that the new City Council will act upon instructions and serve the interests of separate individuals or groups. “When people come to power, they do everything to remain in power,” he said.
