Kiraki: “The issue of refugees isn’t priority for the authorities” (video)
According to the official data of the UNO, as of the end of 2015 the number of refugees in the world makes up 65 million. The United Nations Convention relating to the Status of Refugees (1951) is the main international document on refugees’ rights defense. The Convention was also ratified by Armenia and came into force in 1993. Today the main legal act regulating the sphere is the RA law on “Refugees and asylum”. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) established its representation in Armenia in December, 1992 in order to support 360 000 ethnic Armenian refugees displaced from Azerbaijan, who moved to Armenia as a result of Nagorno Karabakh conflict. Today their number has been decreased for multiple times. During the recent years Armenia has hosted also Syrian Armenians, then the people displaced from Artsakh in April, 2016. This week’s topic of “Kiraki” (Sunday) program is the problems of refugees. Lori and Kyavar TV companies prepared video materials for the program. The program hosted Larisa Alaverdyan, Executive Director of “Against Legal Arbitrariness” NGO, and Gagik Yeganyan, Chief of State Migration Service.
