Expert: Syria peace talks yielded no result
Armenia’s neutral position on Syrian peace talks in Astana is correct, Sargis Grigoryan, an expert in Arabic Studies, said on January 25. He says clashes continue in Aleppo and only a small part of the city’s besieged rebel-held areas is under government control. Although the expert considers the talks positive, he says they have not produced tangible results. "The Astana negotiations should be considered the basis of the Geneva talks. The positive thing is that representatives of Syrian pro-government forces and 15 opposition forces [who dictate their will in Syria] have met but they have not reached any agreement or signed a document,” he said. Sargis Grigoryan says the United States is displaying a passive position in Astana, whereas the behaviour of the Syrian opposition has made it clear that they are negotiating with the Russian Federation. “The opposition in Syria has announced that they do not consider Iran and Damascus negotiating parties,” he added.
