Ashot Navasardyan: I do not think these young people are not patriots (video)
What term should be used by the media when covering the events taking place in Yerevan’s Erebuni district? “This was a kind of political initiative,” says Boris Navasardyan, President of the Yerevan Press Club. “I would describe it an act of extreme desperation,” says Ashot Navasardyan, Chairman of the Committee to Protect Freedom of Expression. He adds that some media outlets hurried to call the members of the “Sasna Dzrer” armed group ‘terrorists.’ At the same time, Mr Navasardyan reminds everyone that terrorists are people without a homeland. “But I do not think that these young people, including Jirayr Sefilyan, are not patriots,” he says. Representatives of media organizations cannot imagine the outcome of the ongoing standoff between security forces and the gunmen holding four police officers hostage at a police building in Erebuni. “The authorities should finally understand that people have lost patience and any reform in the country is, in fact, impossible without the events of June 23, these actions,” said Ashot Melikyan.
