Armenia has been recognized regional astronomical center. Today at the meeting with journalists Areg Mikayelyan, Co-Chair of the Armenian Astronomical Company, researcher at Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO), Head of the Armenian Virtual Observatory, noted that the BAO will hold the title until 2021. “According to the decision of the International Astronomical Center, Armenia has been chosen as the main country of the region, being at the highest level of development and the most appropriate one,” said Mr Mikayelyan, adding that the international community, alas, observes Armenia as a country currently at war and it often avoids cooperating with such countries, so being awarded such a title is a really great achievement. The astronomer noted that Turkey also had pretentions to become an astronomical center in the region, but Armenia was chosen. Mr Mikayelyan added that before being considered a regional astronomical center, Byurakan was distinguished by its activities. “It is notable that being a small village, Byurakan has been included in the list of 10 biggest cities of the world, where astronomical official and international conferences have been held the most.” By the way, during the last two months Byurakan Observatory has discovered new galaxies.
