Anush Sedrakyan: Samvel Babayan's patriotic stance is highly questionable
The return of any politician would be welcome during the military operations. I think he [Samvel Babayan] has returned to participate in the pre-election campaign,” Deputy Chairperson of the Free Democrats Party, Anush Sedrakyan, said speaking about the return of Samvel Babayan, a former commander of the NKR Defense Army. Babayan, who served as the commander of Karabakh’s army in 1993-2000, returned from Russia last month in the wake of April four-day war in Karabakh. “People, who remained silent in the political domain for a long time and preferred to abstain from participating in the country’s political, economic and defense issues, showed up before the elections with the so-called patriotic stance. But that patriotic stance is questionable because in addition to political functions, there are many other functions and a former politician, be he in retirement or in exile, can participate in the political life of his country. I have not noticed such a thing, therefore, I am deeply puzzled,” she said. Asked whether Babayan could be ordered to return by a definite party or person, Mrs Sedrakyan said, “I think this is an attempt to form pro-government blocs in the country. I is vying for a position and it does not matter where he is elected in Armenia or in Artsakh because elections are scheduled to be held in the two Armenian states. But I think that false heroism will not beautify him as heroism is one’s ability to live in the country, for that country and with that country.”
