Naira Zohrabyan: All these proposals are not absolute truth for us (video)
The Armenian legislature today started debates on the final version of the draft Electoral Code. The draft was presented in the National Assembly by Minister-Chief of the Government Staff of Armenia Davit Harutyunyan, one of the co-authors of the document. After Harutyunyan’s speech which lasted for an hour lawmakers began to register for questions. Suddenly it turned out that no one had questions to Davit Harutyunyan as the scoreboard was empty. This caused indignation among lawmakers who started to complain saying that they had registered for questions. To correct the situation, the NA Secretariat said there was some kind of malfunction with the scoreboard. Some 10 minutes later, the lawmakers were asked to address their questions over a microphone. Head of the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) Naira Zohrabyan said they had joined the proposals of their opposition colleagues. “However, even if all proposals are adopted and voter lists are published at least ten times, I am definitely sure of one thing: even if we have the best EC there will always be a way to bypass it if we are not intended to conduct free and fair elections in our country. Thus, we do not view all these proposals as absolute truth, because we think that nothing will change unless there is political will for it.” “Of course, we can conduct brilliant elections but if there is the least doubt it should be made public for us to know what is happening. Imagine that there are cameras installed in all streets and on all flats and houses. Will the number of burglaries increase? Of course, it will not,” said Davit Harutyunyan.
