War and plunder: What does Aliyev clan have to do with it?
The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) has revealed that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has two offshore companies involved in gold mining industry. According to documents leaked by the ICIJ, relatives of the Azerbaijani president have used foundations and companies registered in Panama to hide his shares in gold mining companies and London real estate. “It is obvious that Aliyev has his personal interests in the ongoing hostilities. As far as I know, his activities in Dubai and England have not been disclosed yet. If these documents are fully leaked we shall have a complete imagination of the activities of the Aliyev clan. Can you imagine what consequences it may have for Azerbaijan which is far from being in a perfect situation?” Chairman of the New Times Party Aram Karapetyan told A1+. The political analyst says this can be one of the reasons behind the tensions provoked by Azerbaijan on the border with Kkarabakh. I am convinced that this was one of the main reasons for Aliyev to issue an order to strike Karabakh defense positions. Of course, it was not the most important reason but this lame and desperate decision was aimed at diverting the attention of Azerbaijani people, stimulating patriotism in them and saying ‘we have no time to discuss other matters, we are at war.’ Speaking about Turkey’s stance, the political analyst said, “Turks overtly show that they supported and provoked the current outbreak of tensions in the conflict zone.” Asked whether Aliyev is at a loss, Mr Karapetyan said, “I think he (Aliyev) has been panicking since yesterday after the Armenian troops launched offensive operations along the Line of Contact. They (Azerbaijanis) did not expect such a reaction because they were sure that the situation will remain much the same after their attack on the night of April 1-2. They are unable to understand what happened that changed the situation to their detriment…”
