Member of the Yerevan City Council Stepan Safaryan is not aware how much money was spent on the IWD (International Women's Day) celebrations from the state budget, but he says there was no need for such lavish expenses. “I would not oppose extravagant expenses if the country had a normal socio-economic situation, but all holidays are celebrated at the expense of state funds, which is sheer luxury in a poor country like Armenia,” Mr Safaryan said today. “Our people can mark holidays without great efforts. For example, a group of young people performed dances at Republic Square to congratulate our women. I just do not think that there was a need for synthetic costs,” he added. Speaking about the lavish reception organized by the Yerevan Municipality this morning for female employees, Mr Safaryan said women working at the City Hall surely need attention, 'but they could have organized a modest stand-up meal or something else.' In conclusion, Mr Safaryan added that the City Hall had better help with those funds women who need urgent surgery. “That will be a real feast for them. They had better make the holiday memorable for those who have health problems,” he said.
