Vahan Shirkhanyan, a former deputy defense minister and former deputy prime minister, who was detained in connection with the case of an armed gang on December 19, does not go for strolls in the prison yard. “He has problems with his legs and veins. Although there is a physician in the prison, I am not sure whether he will receive proper care if his condition deteriorates,” Shirkhanyan’s lawyer Stepan Voskanyan told A1+. The lawyer visited Vahan Shirkhanyan today. On November 25, the National Security Service (NSS) said it had neutralized an armed gang which planned to carry out a number of serious crimes in the territory of Armenia. The head of the gang was Artur Vardanyan, a 34-year-old Armenian national who has been a permanent resident of Spain since 1997. Later, the NSS reported that at the preliminary stage of the investigation the group mentioned in their testimonies some peoples’ names, including that of Shirkhanayan.
