Ashot Manucharyan, a member of the Karabakh Committee, does not expect anything good from Sargsyan-Aliyev meeting. He says the situation around the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is due to the whims of foreign players. “Both Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev are under external pressure. They adopted the resolution and are committed to it,” Mr Manucharyan said. However, he says there is one factor that can ease the tensions. “Recently there have been some deals between Russia and the United States, the sides have reached agreements on certain issues. Though the Karabakh issue is not included in them, the general atmosphere is such that Russia no longer perceives every action of the United States as provocation. In this context, they are trying to reduce tensions since Russia announces every day about its readiness to start a nuclear war,” Mr Manucharyan said. He believes that in the present global geopolitical situation both Russia and the United States are interested in keeping peace in the region, specifically in the territory of Azerbaijan. “I see that at present they are not interested in escalating the situation but they can do it at any moment, whenever they want. We cannot allow other countries to decide for us, because we now have the same opportunities that we had during the years of war.”
