Varuzhan Avetisyan: Two extraordinary events happened at Liberty Square (video)
Varuzhan Avetisyan, Spokesman for the joint headquarters of the New Armenia Public Salvation Front, says the police are burning with desire to do harm to people. At first, the police prevented demonstrators from erecting canopy shelters at Liberty Square, then they did not allow to place other items at the square. “They do not even let our van enter the square so that we can get plastic chairs out of it,” Mr Avetisyan said. Summarizing the results of Tuesday’s rally and their round-the-clock protest action, Mr Avetisyan singled out extraordinary events. “A lieutenant, who yesterday used excessive force against Gevorg Safaryan, today again attacked him and threw him onto the ground,” he said adding that Safaryan was standing alone near a statue when the police lieutenant approached him. During a telephone conversation with Varuzhan Avetisyan, Yerevan Police Chief Ashot Karapetyan said Gevorg Safaryan swore at the policeman. However, Avetisyan says it is not true. During the conversation, Ashot Karapetyan also urged the opposition group to remove their van from Liberty Square and park it in another place so that it would not be noticed by people. The vehicle was taken to another place, but Varuzhan Avetisyan says attempts were made to damage it. He adds that nothing will stop them from achieving their goal and will stay there until they thwart the referendum on constitutional amendments and unseat the authorities.
