Debates on the pending constitutional changes continue in Armenia. Artak Davtyan, a lawmaker from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK), and Aram Harutyunyan, Chairman of the National Accord Party, today met journalists to present their stance on the proposed system of government. Artak Davtyan believes that Armenia’s switch to a parliamentary system of government will ensure protection of human rights as well as the rule of law in the judicial system. “The ruling party and the country’s president blame the main problems on the system of government. The HHK says judges are not independent, but they forget that judges are dependent on the government. The president also contradicts himself. Everyone understands that the system has nothing to do with it. The power is in your hands and no one will obstruct you in changing something,” Aram harutyunyan said. He says in fact the authorities are more concerned about their reproduction as no one in the HHK can say who the second person in the party is [after Serzh Sargsyan]. “Seyran Ohanyan’s name was circulated as a presidential candidate but we so what happened. Today no Republican will dare to say who the second person in their party is after Serzh Sargsyan,” Mr Harutyunyan added. For a moment, the chairman of the National Accord Party even deviated from the main topic and said, “I will say that Serzh Sargsyan is a criminal, he is linked to all high-profile murders in the country because he is responsible for our national security."
