Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan visits hunger-striking Volodya Avetisyan

Armenian Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan today visited retired army colonel Volodya Avetisyan in Vardashen prison in Yerevan, Ombudsman’s Spokesperson Shushan Danielyan told A1+. She promised to provide more information later in the day. Avetisyan was convicted of fraud and sentenced to six years in prison in July 2014. He started a hunger strike in the penitentiary in on October 30 as a sign of protest against the decision to an independent commission which rejected for the second time his request for parole. Avetisyan demanded a meeting with Justice Minister Arpine Hovhannisyan, Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan and journalists. Eight more inmates started hunger strike in Vardashen on Monday, but only three of them have been taken to a separate cell.
