Hrant Bagratyan: The only solution is to go to the polls and say 'no' to the new constitution (video)
The draft constitution proposed by Serzh Sargsyan may give birth to dictatorship, even fascism, says Armenian lawmaker Hrant Bagratyan. He offers the authorities to name at least one country with a one-party dominant system which is not an authoritarian country. The opposition lawmaker does not see a single political institution in Armenia which can act as a counterbalance to the ruling party after the adoption of the draft constitution. Serzh Sargsyan himself said these words. The lawmaker refuses to say why Serzh Sargsyan decided to amend the Constitution. “I have fears that since they see that the state is weakening and becoming non-competitive, they want to impose tough decisions on the state,” he said. Mr Bagratyan says we cannot save the situation by boycotting the constitutional referendum. The authorities have already secured 25 percent of “Yes” vote, therefore we should go to the polls and say “no” the new constitution. “The only solution is to vote against the package so that “no” votes will outnumber “yes” votes. Our primary task is to have 27 percent “No” votes against their 25 percent “Yes” votes,” the lawmaker said. Hrant Bagratyan has already been in several communities where they talked to residents and found no supporter of the Sargsyan-proposed constitution. “I have heard many bad things; people are really in a terrible plight.” Anyway, the lawmaker is not going to join the No front which is campaigning against the constitutional amendments.
