Republican lawmaker: Our main concern is to bring people to polling stations (video)

In a parliamentary system, no official will be elected to parliament if the opposition parties vote against them, Republican lawmaker Levon Martirosyan said today. He says the draft constitution which foresees a switch to a parliamentary system of government grants unprecedented powers to the opposition parties. Levon Martirosyan says the parliamentary system implies a coalition government, and there is no alternative to it. At the same time, he considers the referendum on constitutional amendments a historical and epoch-making event. “Our main task is to bring people to polling stations and persuade them that the draft constitution is much better and we shall have a more democratic country once it is adopted,” he said. When reminded that many people in rural areas are not familiar with the old Constitution and cannot compare it with the new one, the lawmaker said, “Our task is not to explain the provisions of the Constitution. It's a legal, political issue. It is not obligatory that people be acquainted with all provisions of the Organic Law. It is more important that the Constitution work in the country,” he said in conclusion.
