Azerbaijani opposition leader severely beaten in jail
Ilgar Mammadov, the leader of the Azerbaijani opposition REAL movement, has been severely beaten up in the prison where he is serving his term. Contact.az cited Mammadov’s lawyer saying this on Monday. Mammadov's lawyer, Javad Javadov, urged the authorities to launch a probe. "My client was beaten in his head and is suffering from persistent headaches," the lawyer said in a statement. "I've demanded that the prosecutor general ( Zakir Qaralov), the justice ministry (Fikrat Mammado) and the country's ombudsman (Elmira Suleymanova,) launch an investigation into the incident," the lawyer said adding that the incident occurred at around 3.30pm on October 16. The lawyer said Mammadov was called to the administrative building of the prison where he was badly beaten by a deputy prison chief and another warder. Then they took him to another room where they were joined by a third person. The three threw Mammadov onto the floor and continued kicking him. Besides, the prison chief threatened him that he would not come out of prison alive. During the meeting with his client, the lawyer saw the injuries on Mammadov’s head and neck, Artsakhpress reports.
