Opposition lawmaker Aram Manukyan today advised activists protesting the package of draft constitutional amendments outside the National Assembly not to be surprised at anything. He said it after police forces tried to detain him during the protest organized by the “You Won’t Pass It” pressure group. “It is the style of work of our policemen. They had better protect our border in the same way.” Deputy Chief of the Yerevan Police, Valeri Osipyan said in reply, “We have gone to the border and we shall go if need be. It is your turn to go.” When asked how it happened that police officers tried to detain Aram Manukyan and whether they did not know that an MP is immune from arrest, Mr Osipyan said, “Policemen are not obliged to know all lawmakers by sight. Aram Manukyan was not wearing an ID badge or card and the policeman was not oblidged to know him.” Seventeen citizens were taken to the Arabik police station during today’s protest action.
