Did we manage to create a strong and secure country: Opinions differ (video)
On September 21, 1991, a referendum on Armenia’s secession from the USSR and independence took place in the country, with over 95 percent of the people voting for independent and democratic Armenia. “Do you agree that the Republic of Armenia becomes a democratic independent state outside the USSR?” Twenty-four years ago, Armenians said a definite “yes” to the question, at the same tie expressing their desire to have a strong and secure country. Over 95 percent of citizens voted for independence of Armenia. The declaration of Independence was adopted at the session of the Supreme Council of Armenia on August 23, 1990. Lithuania was the first country to recognize Armenia's independence before the referendum - on August 14 1991. A total of 47 countries recognized Armenia's independence in 1991. Have we reached our goal of having a strong and secure country and do we consider our country an independent state? Our citizens hold different opinions on the issue.
