Republican MP: Serzh Sargsyan brings a Mercedes Benz S-Class car to politics (video)
Republican Vahram Mkrtchyan compares the constitutional amendments initiated by Serzh Sargsyan with a Mercedes-Benz S Class business car. His opponents want to drive a Zaporozhets, an inexpensive car of the Soviet Union. The supporters of the “No” campaign prefer the old system which creates favourable conditions for them,” he says. The Republican lawmaker says that Serzh Sargsyan does not bring the best German car brand to politics for his personal use. However, the MP cannot guarantee that after leaving the post of the president Serzh Sargsyan will not want to hold one of the top posts in the country. “Life continues, and things might change after 2018,” Mr Mkrtchyan said. Levon Martirosyan, another lawmaker from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, also believes Serzh Sargsyan’s announcement that he would not seek to hold any of the three important positions in the country. “Once he said, he will not break his promise. The law does not prohibit him from becoming, for example, prime minister,” he said. He is sure that Serzh Sargsyan is not maneuvering anyone to have the new constitution adopted. “The draft bill will be adopted anyway, without any obstacles,” he said. Opposition lawmaker Gagik Jhangiryan says the draft constitutional amendments are aimed at ensuring the reproduction of the authorities. “I do not say that the ruling force must necessarily be the Republican Party but we all live in the same country and we all know that the acting authorities have the most powerful lever to maintain power.” The opposition lawmaker meant that many Republicans have been in power since the 90s and have been re-elected ever since. The new constitution must eliminate the political monopoly in the country. The Republicans seemed to be willing to do, but they did the opposite, Mr Jhangiryan said.
