Environmentalist: There is not alternative to new nuclear power plant
Not a single environmentalist will ever accept nuclear power's role in electricity supply; however, in Armenia we have no other option, says Karine Danielyan, Chairperson of 'For Sustainable Human Development' NGO. “The risks are too high, the issue of waste is too serious, but we have no other option, and we also want the new nuclear power plant to be built. At the same time, we should develop alternative energy sources. The demand for solar energy is really great in Armenia,” Karine Danielyan told reporters on Monday. Chairman of the Union of Consumers Armen Poghosyan says the talks about alternative energy sources resemble fairy tales. He reminds that it is impossible to develop the economy without energy. He says the sun shines in all countries but they do not use solar energy. “We should only think about developing nuclear energy,” he stressed. “We should develop the nuclear power plant, built a new power unit instead of taking new loans from Russia,” he said.
